I was born & raised in the Caribbean area, I grew up between rivers, seas & lagoons so fishing has always been present in my life. The area where I lived was remote so getting fishing equipment was very difficult. Driven by my love for fishing I decided to build my own bamboo pole, motivated by the ambition of becoming a fisherman. When I was 15 years old a hotel with a marina opened in the Limon area. I started working there & little by little, thanks to my efforts, I progressed in the business. Years later the hotel changed its administration but the new owner saw my interest in progressing & he invited me to fish on the Pacific side, where fishing was completely different. This is how I spent the following years moving from Limon to the Pacific constantly, but at the age of 29 I settled in Quepos where I have worked since then in fishing. More than being a captain I am a fisherman who loves & respects this beautiful art.

CAPT Eric Chavarria
Since I was very young, fishing caught my attention. When I reached adolescence I decided to enter the INA (National Institute of Learning) to take a navigation course. That was how, in 1998 my journey through the sea began. During these years I have had many experiences, some good ones and others not so good, like the hurricane Otto which brought strong winds, high waves, thunders & heavy rain. In other words, the perfect storm. However, this is what I'm passionate about. I have been dedicating my life to this art for 23 years & I can't imagine my life anywhere other than in the sea.

MATE ERROL BARBOZA
The sea is my life, it’s part of my history. My name is Errol and I was born in this place, the port of Quepos has always been like my playground. My house is built in the mangroves. When it was dry I used to play soccer and when it filled up we stayed inside the house, since we couldn't go out due to the sea, that was the time to prepare dinner. We pulled the ropes through the wood on the floor and we pulled out snappers and sea bass, the sea always provided my family what we needed. When I was 11 years old I worked with an American who had a boat and that’s where I learned about the mechanics and maintenance. Working from here to there I acquired knowledge of everything a boat needs for its proper functioning. If there is one thing I can say, it's that the sea is my home. I can’t imagine my life anywhere else other than the sea.

MATE SADA ABARCA
My name is Sada and I’m a girl who loves the sea and fishing. When I turned 18 I started working as a photographer but this didn’t last long because shortly after taking pictures on fishing trips I began to fell in love with it.My beginning wasn’t easy because as a woman it’s difficult to make your way in a masculine world such as sport fishing or even fishing. However, driven by my desire to become a fisher woman I began to work for free just to learn about this art. I spent a few months like this but thanks to my effort i managed to stand out and a few years later I was named sailor of the month by Gray Taxidermy. By now I’m working as a mate but my dream is to become the first female captain of Costa Rica.
